Powderhorn365 ::Gayla Ellis I was born and raised in the north and northeast Twin Cities metro area, then moved to the southside of Minneapolis. I've lived in Powderhorn since 1980. I am now fortunate to live on the park’s west side. As a 2010 photographer for Powderhorn365, I'm having a year of discovery - the neighborhood, photographic technique, and people - yet I feel I only skim the surface at times and still have a lot to learn. As a photographer, performance artist, artist-in-residence, editor, and community member, I collaborate with visual artists, musicians, puppeteers, writers, and poets. Even while learning digital photography, I still love to shoot slide film and to project light through those images, a disappearing art. The world of photography has changed since my youth, when many hours were spent in a darkroom. It's never too late to learn. I am now studying digital technology and software for managing and editing, as well as creating a website. (Site will be provided when available.) Other photographers are the most helpful source of information and technique, especially the people associated with powderhorn365.com. I am often inspired by my fellow camera hounds. My themes tend to be city life, the changing seasons, the May Day Parade and Festival, people at play or at work, travel to other places, celebrations and ceremonies, Lake Street, family events, purple houses, peace and social justice issues, flowers, rain gardens, ecology and nature, community gatherings, Powderhorn Park, Halloween, and random occurrences. In addition to photo exhibits, framed work for customers, and slide shows, I create photocards (available at the May Day Cafe and at The Color Wheel, both in Minneapolis, and on my future website). I shoot digital images with an EOS Digital Rebel 300D, a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H55, and occasionally a Canon PowerShot A570. I still use my Canon EOS, AE-1, and A-1 film cameras for special projects. I have a collection of older cameras which reminds me of the history of the art. For me, it’s not just about the equipment; it’s how shape, texture, light, composition, and other factors help me to find the life and magic in the moment. |
